BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling form of martial arts that emphasizes leverage and technique. This means a smaller person can realistically defend themselves against someone bigger and stronger. That makes it especially appealing for people of all ages, sizes, and genders. At PCAA, both adult and youth BJJ classes include drilling of technique as well as sparring, or "rolling."  For white belts, the instruction is curriculum-based to ensure members build a solid foundation in the fundamental positions and escapes.

Fitness and Health

It builds strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance, but in a way that feels like play instead of just exercise. Many people find it more engaging than lifting weights or running on a treadmill.

Problem-Solving and Mental Benefits

Practitioners often compare BJJ to “human chess.” Every roll is about strategy, timing, and adapting to what your opponent does. This makes it mentally stimulating as well as physically demanding.

Community and Culture

At PCAA, we foster a strong sense of community. People train together, push each other, and build friendships. Since BJJ includes submissions, training partners must trust each other to release a submission hold when their opponent taps. For many, the academy feels like a second family.

Personal Growth and Confidence

Because progress is visible—you survive longer, escape more positions, eventually submit tougher partners—it builds confidence and resilience. The belt system (white to black belt) also gives long-term goals and milestones.
